Last night at the VizUM Symposium (videos coming soon) I announced my next big project, the Open Visualization Academy. I’ll launch it in 2025, likely in the second half of the year. The logo is by Vinicius Sueiro and the temporary website, where you can get a few more details and sign up for updates, is by my data science student Michela Effendie.
Thanks to my Knight Chair funding I can finally bring this long-time dream of mine to life. The Open Visualization Academy will be a free, open source, and constantly expanding library of knowledge of anything related to information design and visualization (not just data visualization) that I’ll curate. All videos, writings, or any other resource we put online will be freely accessible to and downloadable by anyone. I’ll try to prioritize quality over quantity, and I’ll take community requests to develop future courses and tutorials.
To begin with, the Open Visualization Academy will offer a new introduction to information design and data visualization self-guided video class that I’ll teach (five or six hours, I think); a series of in-depth video lectures by experts, covering exploratory data analysis, statistical reasoning with charts and maps, critical data science, accessibility in visualization, generative AI for design, and many other topics; software tutorials that will prioritize free or freemium tools; and a new annual massive open online course that I’ll organize and lead.
Besides that, all data and visualization-related conferences that I organize or host at the University of Miami, including VizUM, will be part of the Open Visualization Academy.
This is a lot of work, as you may imagine, but I’ll hope that it’ll be worth it. I also hope that you’ll join us. You can sign up to receive news about the Open Visualization Academy here.
This is so cool!
Thanks for the update! Will include it in our next IDSC eblast :D
